Open Tides

Open Tides has opened my eyes to tears. This film was so beautifully made, like poetry. The use of time lapse with the moving sun of a day in the life of Masonboro island and returning a year later after a hurricane was an effective way to set up this love letter to nature. The deep respect Andre has for the environment is truly moving. The most poignant part of the film was when he wrote that he dropped his phone in the water while capturing images. His first thought was not about losing the phone or the contents saved inside, but the affects that it's innards would have to the water over a period of time. His fascination with how the skeleton of a farm animal could end up washed up on a marsh was a thought many wouldn't spend long to ponder. The reference to a manatee (sea cow) added a sprinkle of humor to this otherwise serious piece was refreshing. Andre's use of multiframe images and color layers shifting as a bird flies through the frame was simply genious. I have so much appreciation for this piece and the effort and time in which it took to make it. This is an exemplary love letter to mother nature and I am looking forward to watching it again!
